I have a bad case of the English

English is my second language and learning it did not happen overnight. I’ve been studying English since I was a little girl, but becoming fluent was a different story.

Some people think that because I’ve been living here for a while that my language skills should be automatically perfect. Living in an English-speaking country doesn’t necessarily means you will master the language without putting some effort in it.

When international students first arrive in the US, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. I sure did, and would often get headaches in the beginning. Adjusting to the new language takes some time and you might feel lost trying to translate and understand.

“One day at a time”, my host mother would advise me while I stared at textbooks and scrambled through my notes trying to understand and decode American Literature. Headache again.
